In Lyndhurst, N.J. -- GLOBAL LEADER SIKA CORPORATION EXPANDS U.S. TECHNOLOGY HEADQUARTERS: RONALD SCHMIDT & ASSOCIATES, P.A., DESIGNS 17,200 SQ. FT. ADDITION
The Sika Corporation, a world leader in producing chemical additives for the construction and automotive industries, has enhanced its award-winning R & D Technology Center with the completion of a 17,200 sq. ft. office/warehouse addition in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. The new facility was designed by Ronald Schmidt & Associates, P.A., the prominent architectural and interior design firm.
"Our challenge was to create a state-of-the art warehouse, but avoid the huge mass,'big box' look that is frequently the signature of warehouse facilities," said Ronald H. Schmidt, President/CEO of Ronald Schmidt & Associates, P.A., of Englewood, N.J. "The owner was committed to our mission of not landmarking a major Lyndhurst intersection with some jumbo 'whale-like' structure," Schmidt observed.
Headquartered in Switzerland, the Sika Corporation has a long, distinguished history of operations in the United States. The Lyndhurst site at Polito and Valleybrook Avenues is also home to Sika's U.S. Headquarters.
Pictured here at recent ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the new office/warehouse are (left to right) Enrico Tissi, CEO & President, Sika Corporation; Ronald H. Schmidt, AIA, President/CEO of Ronald Schmidt & Associates, P.A.; and Dr. Walter Gruebler, CEO Sika AG, a member of Senior Management.
In the words of Schmidt, here's how he and his design team in a sense boiled the building down to size, "we broke the building down into smaller components, so this visually softened the large mass and reduced the scale of the structure." pg. 2/2
Specially innovative was the design team's answer to improve the appearance of the loading area, which tend to be unsightly in warehouse/distribution facilities. A 3,600 sq. ft. office mezzanine was designed to hang over the loading section and cloak it like a canopy. Office workers are greeted by a handsome glass entranceway leading to an elevatored lobby. The lobby promises the smooth flow of personnel traffic, serving as the connecting link between new and existing warehouse facilities at the ground level and joins new and existing office sites on the mezzanine.
In its notable history, Sika's technology made it possible for the U.S. Navy to use concrete hulls for World War II Victory Ships when steel was in short supply. Sika sealants, mortars and resins were used in the restoration of The Statue of Liberty plus a host of other landmarks. Anthony Jurg, Sika Vice President of Lyndhurst Operations, coordinated the project progress with Ronald Schmidt & Associates, P.A.
Peter Grieco, AIA was the Project Principal for the designer. John D'Ambrosio, AIA was the Project Manager.
Ronald Schmidt & Associates, P.A., is widely known for its design work in 21 states, including corporate offices, hotels, health care institutions and K-12 schools. As one of New Jersey's largest firms it has won the American Institute of Architects' top design award a record-setting 24 times, in addition to many other awards.
